- All about Planting Food Plots |
| Wild birds are making a come back in populations
in the USA. |

PLANT SEEDS for Food Plots. |
Birds like a wide variety of crop seeds along with
other sources of foods; insects, weeds, berries, worms, flower nectar etc. We have
concentrated our suggestions on man-planted stands of various pure and mixed varieties of
food sources from seeds. Be sure and also see our pages on wildflowers which some
species of birds also enjoy.
FOOD PLOTS FOR BIRDS:
Pheasant food plots can be planted with strip
plantings of corns, millets, oats, buckwheat,or soybeans. Weed seeds like thistle grasses,
sumac, nightshade, burdock, and rag weed are heavy seeders. Trees such as dogwood, wild
cherry, and hardwoods. All the wild berries and tame berry varieties are great
attractants as well as beans, sunflowers, clovers, sorghums and dandelions. The food plots
that can be planted for the different sub-species of pheasant will depend upon your locale
and what will easily grow.
The pheasant is a fairly large game bird with a
mature male reaching lengths upwards of a yard long from the beak to the end of his tail
feathers. A mature male usually weighs in at about 3 lbs and is very intelligent and as
with most of the wildlife is the more spectacular in color and plumage. The mature hen
usually reaches lengths of about 20 inches and weighs a meager one pound.
The most well known species of pheasant is the Chinese ring neck which is often considered one of Americas favorite game birds although the
bird is not a native to American soil. The pheasant was introduced into the United States
sometime in the early 1800s from China and since its introduction has
flourished very well in the northern states and also the Midwest. Attempts to introduce
the pheasant into southern states have however met with a lot of problems. Some
scientist speculate the lack of lime in the soil the main reason for the failed
introduction attempts. Lime is needed by hens during and after pregnancy as a source
of calcium as well as in the formation of healthy eggs.
