Annual Rye Grass Use In Food Plots
Annual Ryegrass is a leafy, cool-season grass that is
highly preferred by deer, turkey rabbits and other wildlife. It is a popular product for use in over-seeding and
cover crop programs. Normally Annual Ryegrass germinates fast in approximately 7-10 days and
quickly develops an extensive root system. It
can grows to a
height of 1.5 to 3 feet. Ryegrass produces an abundance of
leaves near the base of the plant and long seed stalk above
leaves. It tends to be an attractive grass because of its waxy, bright dark
green color, thus is found as an overseeding use in lawns. Food Plot use
includes use as a mixture with
clovers and other food plot forages. Rapid growth in late spring
can be expected. Annual is
not as cold hardy as Perennial
and will generally die as summer approaches in most warmer southern states..
