Perennial Ryegrass Use In Wildlife Food Plots
Perennial Ryegrass, also
known as English or Australian ryegrass is a native of Europe.
It has been used both for lawns and as cultivated pastures from the
1700's.
Perennial Ryegrass is a short lived perennial that grows to an
average
height of 1.5 to 2+ feet if left un-mowed. It produces an abundance of
thin, fine leaves near the base of the plant with long seed stalks above
leaves. It is a very attractive grass because of its waxy, bright dark
green leaf color. Perennial Ryegrass is used in lawns and
also in food plots and pastures (usually as a mixture with clovers
and other grasses). Perennial Ryegrass will provide
rapid growth in mid-late spring.
Perennial
Ryegrass (forage types) can be used by Deer, turkey, rabbits and other wildlife during winter months. Clovers can be
introduced into the stand to improve palatability. Winter grains and
Winter peas may be included in wildlife game mixtures with ryegrass.
Annual Ryegrass is also used in many wildlife plantings and is
generally cheaper - thus may be a better choice for wildlife
food plantings that are temporary (annual) crops.
