Planting White Winter Peas Seed For Food Plots
When planting any crop, it is important to understand that the fertility, type of soil and other environmental factors will vary according to your location. The planting information provided here is generalized and you should adjust planting rates, times and so forth for your location. Desired plant density should be considered to help determine your planting rate. If in doubt check with your Agricultural Extension Office.
- Date: Sept. - Oct.; May be planted in the early Spring as an annual crop or in Northern areas
- Rate: Broadcast - 75 to 100 lbs. per acre; Drilled - 50 to 70 lbs. per acre. For soil nitrogen fixing plant 100 to 150 lbs. per acre.
- Depth: 1 to 2 inches. Note that peas require 3/8" of moist soil above the seed to germinate and protect the new seedling from hard freezes that may occur in some areas.
- Planting with other crops - It has been recommended that White Winter Peas be planted with Daikon Radishes at a rate of 10 lbs **Daikon Radishes** to 90 Lbs of White Winter Peas. The
Radishes will break up the soil as well as provide additional forage.
- If you are planting peas to use as hay it is beneficial to add a small grain forage crop that will grow at your location.
